Hello NCBC Members and Friends,

Bruce's wife Margaret called me this week to tell me that she has been deeply moved by all of the response and good wishes she has received from bicyclists in the Triangle region.  She has written a letter to all of us who are interested in providing a donation, or otherwise honoring Bruce's memory.

She asked me to make this letter available to any cyclists who are interested in our area.  We will have this letter on display at tomorrow's rally, and I will post it in the announcements section of the NCBC forums.  Feel free to share it with any other cyclists who may be interested.

A Celebration Of Life in memory of Bruce will most likely occur in Spring 2010. As per his wishes, there will be no wake or funeral.

The City of Raleigh is in need of additional volunteers to serve on the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commission.  The basic charge of the Commission will be to guide and oversee the implementation of the recently adopted bicycle plan.  Once established, the Commission will refine its mission and develop rules for its business.  If you live in the City of Raleigh and you're interested in serving in this capacity, please contact your City Council representative or call/email me and I'll get you started.  I think the City would like to get this Commission up and running within the next month or so, so if you want to apply I would recommend that you do so promptly.

Many of you are aware that the Comprehensive Bicycle Plan was adopted by City Council on April 7th. I wanted to thank each of you for your commitment to this project in helping make it a reality. The final plan can be downloaded at http://www.raleighnc.gov/bicycle but I will also mail all BAC members a copy of the plan on CD ROM. Now of course comes the difficult part of getting the plan implemented and with our current budget situation we will not likely be able to move forward many or any of the bicycle infrastructure improvements recommendations at this time. Nonetheless, we will turn our energy to marketing the plan and bringing awareness to what is forthcoming by way of education, encouragement and enforcement.  To that end, The City Council is now accepting applications for the Raleigh Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.  This seven member commission will oversee the implementation of all elements of the Bicycle Plan and also promote both bicycle and pedestrian safety, enhanced mobility for cyclists and pedestrians and provide feedback on obstacles and opportunities within the City.  Anyone interested in serving on this commission should contact their respective Councilor and provide a letter of interest and resume. Nominees will be discussed on voted on at the full City Council meetings until seven nominations are approved.  There will be an effort to maintain geographic equity among the selected RBPAC members.

Other Updates -
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Planner position with the City of Raleigh was not cut from the budget but is still frozen until further notice.
We were unsuccessful in obtaining a grant from NCDOT Bike-Ped Division to complete a citywide Pedestrian Plan for this funding cycle but we will apply again next year.

The mission of Bikes for the World (BfW) is to collect valuable but unwanted bicycles and related material--parts, tools, and accessories--in the U.S. and deliver them at low cost to community programs assisting the poor in developing countries. The bikes donated to our partner organizations provide much-needed and affordable transportation to laborers, micro-entrepreneurs, farmers, health workers, and students. As much as possible, Bikes for the World uses the donated bicycles to help set-up self-sustaining bicycle repair
operations which can make enough money to pay the direct costs for subsequent container shipments of donated bicycles. Thus, we ask those donating the bicycles to offset the cost of shipping the bikes by making a tax-deductible $10 donation per bike.
